What’s At Stake

We have two weeks left to ensure that democracy is preserved

The challenge is before us. Throughout our history, we have faced watershed moments that have tested our national resolve. We managed to maintain the Union and eradicate slavery after a horrific Civil War that claimed more than 600,000 lives. We confronted and surmounted a depression that brought America and the world to its knees. On two occasions, we were brought into world wars. The second could have ended democracy in large swaths of the world, including in our own country. We survived a decade of traumatic assassinations, war, civil chaos and a president who personified dishonesty in public office.

Today, we face something unique: a malevolent movement led by a mentally ill, criminal despot who would turn the nation into his own plaything, using the unlimited power granted him by a corrupt Supreme Court to imprison his adversaries, accuse as traitors those who defy him and prepared to turn a 900-page hate screed into a user’s manual to dismantle rights, deport immigrants and turn the nation into a dictatorship subject to the whims of one man.

This cannot be allowed to happen. We can only prevent it by voting in unprecedented numbers.

This experiment has survived all of these crises

and emerged stronger. If we fail at this juncture, we will be so weakened as to face decades before we can reclaim what we enjoyed for two centuries, if we can at all. Donald Trump will eventually be gone. The movement he represents, however, is not going anywhere. The sobering fact is that nearly half this country is willing to dispose of democracy in order to win. They view it as a matter of survival. Well, so do we. It is not Democrats who are attempting to manage the lives of Republicans. It is the Republicans who are determined to force the rest of us to live under their warped screed.

We can turn back this tide with a decisive victory, one convincing enough to persuade the opponents of freedom to return to their homes and dictate their terms to their own adherents and leave the rest of us alone. If they choose not to, then we will truly face the ultimate crisis.

We cannot take a pass on this election. To those Democrats who have issues with the ticket, please in heaven’s name put them aside for now and vote for freedom. Vote now. Vote in record numbers. Our country truly depends on it.
