We are living in the most fucked-up, deeply dangerous times. It’s difficult to tell how much of the general public is aware of what’s going on. And there are days like today, when this is the first time I’ve even looked at Substack because I just get too upset. I’m deeply empathic, and I can’t spend all of my time furious and devastated. Then they steal my life, and they win. The only other thing I’m probably going to read is Jess Craven‘s weekly Extra, Extra column, which always gives me some hope. Mark, how much do you know about the SAVE Act? I'm not about to accept that it's as "dead" as we're hearing, and I have an extremely uncomfortable gut feeling that this is what they'll unleash a day or two before the elections. Illegally, undoubtedly, but without time for the courts to act.
Here's a specific situation regarding this, for which you may or may not feel you can tell me something for sure. (That will make sense in a minute.)
In *finally* getting my "real I.D." driver's license a few weeks ago, I discovered that the name on my birth certificate is already on my voter registration card, i.e., birth certificate Mary Smith; voter registration Mary Smith Jones, and name under which I do most business is Mary S. Jones..."Smith," in this case, now being my legal middle name. I think I still have one credit card which has all three names on it, whether that's helpful or not. The fact that it's already on my voter registration makes me wonder if when they do throw a flash-bang into the middle of everything on Halloween or in the couple days following if I might be "safe."
(I'm already not safe under this regime; no one is, but that's a whole other conversation.)
If that disaster should come to pass and you use your husband’s surname, absent a passport you would need an ID and a birth certificate. Let’s cross that bridge when come to it. The last thing I want to is to cause alarm.
Well…I have my original birth certificate; my updated DL with the star on it (that everyone else had a couple of years ago, and my SS card, which I think has only my middle initial. But both my voter registration card—would that be as old as our current address?—AND our last reminder to check our voter registration, which came via USPS, have my legal middle name/maiden name listed on them.
Not asking for legal advice here, just an opinion. And that sounds like “get your passport application in, STAT.”

I know quite a bit about it, and I’m not ready to declare it dead until the elections are behind us. The cowards in the senate cannot be trusted.
